Assessments
1. Media Sector Mapping, Liberia, 2007
Search for Common Ground's Radio for Peacebuilding, Africa project did a number of these media sector mappings in different central and West African countries. They are all available from the website. The Liberian one was the first, and I was involved in all the others also.
2. Radio Soap Opera Assessment, South Sudan, 2007
FreeVoice International (NL) asked me to assess the potential and the difficulties of managing a radio soap opera in South Sudan. They had already received the money, but the realities on the ground had changed and they had little or no experience in doing such a programme.
3. PDEV Media Assessment, Mauritania, 2008
The assessment was done, and recommendations made, but politics intervened and all bilateral agreements between the US and Mauritania were suspended shortly afterwards. Although I was sent back in 2010 to re-assess the situation, and prospects for the project now look hopeful.
4. Radio Soap Opera Assessment, Sri Lanka, 2008
The FCO wanted an assessment of the potential of a radio soap opera promoting tolerance and understanding in the country while the war was still going on, and an assessment of the capabilities of YA-TV - a wonderful organisation - as the implementer of such a project. I later went on to train the creative and production team, and to mentor them for the life of the project.
5. PDEV Media Assessment, Mauritania, 2010
Equal Access is the media partner with AED on the USAID funded Peace through Development (PDEV) programme in Chad, Niger and Mauritania. It's been a bit of a stop-go process thanks to the volatile nature of politics in the region, but it seems likely that the programme will finally get going in Mauritania now. My role was to assess the media in the country, and to make recommendations about the type of radio programming which could be possible and effective.
